There's no denying that UK thrush/songwriter Polly Scattergood is as attractive as a button and in possession of a worthy little chirp of a forum; but her recently released eponymous launching album only helps to establish the point that looks can only get you so far. To be immaculate, it's not like Scattergood isn't first-rate or that her debut album is a terminated waste—there are a couple tunes here that are catchy enough to rate repeated listens—but for the duration of an unimpaired album, Scattergood's immoderately emotional lyrics are only too much to take for any grown man or woman. She approaches the seniority of the album in a quirky Regina Spektor vocal comfort, albeit void of any of Spektor's trademark humor. In preference to, she replaces wit with tiresome, almost shameful ramblings about love and wastage, her cute little vocal turning into a trite mean whisper at times. A key norm is the excruciating opening pursue “I Hate the Way,” which after torture through lyrics like “I abhor the way I bleed each

Dark Non-stop of the Soul by Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse from EMI/Self-released released on ? 7 out of 10
Black Night of the Soul features a reserve of original full-color photographs by David Lynch, more than a hundred pages extended. However, you won’t find this album in stores because of a label fight against with EMI—instead, you can buy the book in stores that comes with a emancipate blank CD that says, “For Legal Reasons, enclosed CD-R contains no music. Use it as you will.” That’s stepping around the law with a shrewd look and mumble instructing you to creep the music. If you buy the book, you won’t feel like you’re committing larceny (it’ll run you fifty bucks), but I didn’t buy the rules. Instead, I listened to the free online flood at NPR. But even though I’m not an avid enough photography enthusiast to taste a U.S. Grant on pretty pictures, I’d willingly plunk down some cash for the disc if it ever gets to stores; it’s truly good.
The Brian Burton/Triumph Linklous collaboration is an exciting view not just for those two, but also a slew of guest vocalists and musicians, including Sullen Rhys, Frank Black, Iggy Pop, James Mercer, Julian Casablancas, the Blasted Lips, Suzanne Vega, Jason Lytle and, yes, Mr. Lynch. Laid out on NPR in a only forty-six minute chunk, the presence of distinctive songs is less noticeable to me than typical LPs, even when the transitions are exceptional, like when Casablancas’ garage-meets-Dntel doozy “No Girl” moves into the guitar overdrive of “Angel’s Harp” (with Knavish). This segment is the most instantly memorable (with Liable to be Mouse’s laptop tweaks clashing with twisted guitar chords and brief-but-presumptuous solos) but also one of the weaker runs. I file the more effervescent but shadow-cloaked pop gems of the front subdivision (the Flaming Lips track sounds like a Soothe Bulletin-era leftover) and the psychedelic tripping and somber dirges of the last ten minutes or so. Because of his fondness for patron star aides and the sometimes schizophrenic quality of his genre swapping, this is much more a Sparklehorse album than it is Risk Mouse’s, if that helps you make up your be in touch with oneself decide, but really I just recommend you get yourself a CD-R and hit light until (I hope) this finally lands in music aisles. Polly Scattergood by Polly Scattergood from Turn down Records released on 19/05/09 4 out of 10
There's no denying that UK chorus-member/songwriter Polly Scattergood is as lovely as a button and in possession of a fine hardly ever chirp of a voice; but her recently released eponymous debut album only helps to result the point that looks can only get you so far. To be fair, it's not like Scattergood isn't good or that her debut album is a complete consume—there are a couple tunes here that are catchy enough to earn repeated listens—but for the duration of an unscathed album, Scattergood's overly frantic lyrics are just too much to take for any grown man or girlfriend. She approaches the majority of the album in a quirky Regina Spektor vocal luxury, albeit void of any of Spektor's trademark humor. Preferably, she replaces wit with tiresome, almost embarrassing ramblings about lover and loss, her cute little vocal turning into a trite minor whisper at times. A key example is the severe opening track “I Have an aversion to the Way,” which after suffering through lyrics like “I execrate the way I bleed each time you kiss me,” the chase ends in a disastrous attempt at oral word. It's sad too, because songs like "Please Don't Set off" and "Nitrogen Pink" are winners that have been regretfully clashing in with a CD full of melodramatic mush. (Tyler Barlass)
