With it’s convenience life-jumping structure creating a nature that’s joyful at one importance, then wrist-slashing apt at the next, 500 DAYS OF SUMMER’s emotive roller coaster is chicly engineered from start to fulfil. The ska guitar energy of the Dark Lips’ “Bad Kids,” the agreeable strut of The Doves’ “There Goes the Diffidence” and The Tender Device”’s U2-like guitar strumming of “ Dessert Disposition” all have a first-rate montage-ready rhythms. Mumm-Ra’s “She’s Got You Grave” does much to compact Tom’s hopes of victorious back Summer, yet has a melancholy chew that promises he’ll be further f’d up by her. Then there are outrightly beautiful bits with the retro keyboard ballad of Meaghan Smith’s “Here Comes Your Man,” it’s off-kilter chorus sounding off with “So want, so long.” And what crackpot compilation wouldn’t be unmixed without a French song
In May this year, Brian Eno was column in Prospect magazine about the current report of the music business as it continues to be assailed by digital technology. Among the things Eno discussed was the packaging of music:
The duplicability of recordings has had another unexpected truly. The pressure is on to develop content that isn’t certainly copyable—so now everything other than the recorded music is becoming the valuable part of what artists push. … That suggests to me the possibility of a refreshingly classless art market: a new way for visual artists, designers, animators and overlay-makers to make a living. So, as one trade folds, several others open up. (More.)
Having started out as an album wrap artist (I wasn’t a plotter back then), and working still as a CD designer, this is naturally an attracting thesis. Earlier this week John Walsh in The Non-aligned wrote a potted history of the album binding and noted that the big record companies are also realising again that concomitant music as an artform is more than merely a gleaning of audio tracks:
Apple, founder of the iPod and the iTunes store—the sworn enemies of commercially-packaged music—is getting into bed with the four largest documentation labels, to help them stimulate album sales. They’re working with EMI, Sony Music, Warner Music and Wide-ranging Music Group on something called “Propel Cocktail” that will produce all deportment of extras to go with albums: interactive booklets, sleeve notes, photographs, lyrical sheets, even video clips. Buyers will be qualified to call up album tracks through the interactive booklet, while leafing through pictures of the border and trying to make sense of the lyrics.
This, however, seems to be missing the locale. Absolutely anything digital can be copied and passed on, and that applies equally to album extras as to the tracks themselves. What can’t be copied, of despatch, is a desirable object which contains the music. The unreasonable album sleeves of the 1970s were very much choice objects which contained music, and no end of carbon copy CDs of Physical Graffiti will match the smash of Peter Corriston and Mike Doud’s sketch for the vinyl release.
Which brings us to Moldover’s particular light-operated theremin-in-a-CD-case, a pretty design and a really clever use of the pitiful jewel case box. The music on Moldover’s accompanying CD may be swapped around illicitly but no one is contemporary to copy the hardware. The “Astounding Edition” of this work costs $50 and can be ordered here.
Moldover’s theremin is only an adjunct to his music, albeit a pleasurable one. Tristan Perich, on the other hand, like Fm3’s Buddha Tool, makes the case and the instrument one, and in Perich’s case (so to warn) possibly takes the 8-bit/chiptune fad to a definitive extreme. This is the kind of introduction we could use more of, not some lazy Flash applications appended to a pop set free then dumped onto the iTunes Store as an “one”. It’s notable that the one possession all these works have in common is that they’re the inventions of no-budget unconnected artists, not big record labels.
