Tractor Tavern keeps on truckin' 15 y...

Tractor, because, 15 years ago this month, it gave a name to what's now the longest-lived music venue in Seattle.

On a just out weekday afternoon, proprietress Dan Cowan and a few Tractor team members are pressure-cleaning the loading practise medicine behind the club. Inside, a twosome of wagon-wheel chandeliers hangs from the ceiling and a cordon of Christmas lights and cowboy boots is strung from a rafter.

Leased from the Wide Sea Fisherman's Union, the Tractor is housed in a erection erected back in 1902 that reportedly once housed a Scandinavian gambol hall and later a strand of concert venues such as the Prairie Schooner and New Euphoniousness Tavern.

Cowan, a bar P and restaurateur, took over in August 1993 and took stimulus from Amell's painting.

Then he began booking zydeco and Celtic bands and holding contra dances — a New England shape of folk dance, where people recover consciousness to learn new steps and go out.

"It was like trying to find a place that wasn't competing with, I don't be acquainted with, the Central Tavern and RCKNDY, the Crocodile," Cowan says, prospering down the roster of Seattle grunge-era clubs.

by Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse
from EMI/Self-released
released on ?
7 out of 10

Black Night of the Soul features a enlist of original full-color photographs by David Lynch, more than a hundred pages protracted. However, you won’t find this album in stores because of a label contest with EMI—instead, you can buy the book in stores that comes with a on the house blank CD that says, “For Licit Reasons, enclosed CD-R contains no music. Use it as you will.” That’s stepping around the law with a aware look and mumble instructing you to imitate the music. If you buy the book, you won’t feel like you’re committing larceny (it’ll run you fifty bucks), but I didn’t buy the order. Instead, I listened to the free online spout at NPR. But even though I’m not an avid enough photography enthusiast to exclude a U.S. Grant on pretty pictures, I’d willingly plunk down some cash for the disc if it ever gets to stores; it’s truly good.

The Brian Burton/Identify Linklous collaboration is an exciting projected not just for those two, but also a slew of guest vocalists and musicians, including Grumpy Rhys, Frank Black, Iggy Pop, James Mercer, Julian Casablancas, the Egregious Lips, Suzanne Vega, Jason Lytle and, yes, Mr. Lynch. Laid out on NPR in a unmarried forty-six minute chunk, the presence of human being songs is less noticeable to me than typical LPs, even when the transitions are smashing, like when Casablancas’ garage-meets-Dntel doozy “Cheap Girl” moves into the guitar overdrive of “Angel’s Harp” (with Coloured). This segment is the most instantly memorable (with Threat Mouse’s laptop tweaks clashing with knotted guitar chords and brief-but-impertinent solos) but also one of the weaker runs. I advance the more effervescent but shadow-cloaked pop gems of the front measure out (the Flaming Lips track sounds like a Diffused Bulletin-era leftover) and the psychedelic tripping and somber dirges of the last ten minutes or so. Because of his fondness for visitor star aides and the sometimes schizophrenic world of his genre swapping, this is much more a Sparklehorse album than it is Peril Mouse’s, if that helps you make up your sapience, but really I just recommend you get yourself a CD-R and hit desire until (I hope) this finally lands in music aisles. pollyscattergoodPolly Scattergood
by Polly Scattergood
from Mum Records
released on 19/05/09
4 out of 10

There's no denying that UK caroller/songwriter Polly Scattergood is as cunning as a button and in possession of a fine particle chirp of a voice; but her recently released eponymous premiere album only helps to prove the meat that looks can only get you so far. To be fair, it's not like Scattergood isn't top-drawer or that her debut album is a complete sink—there are a couple tunes here that are catchy enough to earn repeated listens—but for the duration of an in one piece album, Scattergood's overly emotive lyrics are just too much to take for any grown man or lassie. She approaches the majority of the album in a quirky Regina Spektor vocal pattern, albeit void of any of Spektor's trademark humor. Rather than, she replaces wit with tiresome, almost embarrassing ramblings about intended and loss, her cute little vocal turning into a trite short whisper at times. A key example is the unbearable opening track “I Flinch from the Way,” which after suffering through lyrics like “I hostility the way I bleed each time you kiss me,” the oversee ends in a disastrous attempt at vocal word. It's sad too, because songs like "Please Don't Employ" and "Nitrogen Pink" are winners that have been regretfully hybrid in with a CD full of melodramatic mush. (Tyler Barlass)
