A golden age for Handel performance
No composer has enjoyed such a endless period of intense unearthing in recent years as George Frideric Handel. With the 300th anniversary of his descent in 1985, so many stage and concert works roared out of shade so quickly that you could fool yourself into believing you at least had a unspecific view of the vast scene of his 42 operas and 29 oratorios.But as much as he mined the same formulas and recycled his own music, Handel's works aren't akin. And until this year, the 250th anniversary of his end, most of us had only a keyhole view of the composer.
Now we're in a blissful age of Handel performance in terms of frequency and worth - at least in music capitals other than Philadelphia. Even with soprano Julianne Baird (a set up of historically informed Handel line) at nearby Rutgers University, Philadelphia is superb-known for baroque music in big-orchestra transcriptions.
