The lynchpin on which the take rests is Humphrey Bogart. If you don’t allow that a romance could blossom between Bogie and Hepburn due to the age gap and the miscellaneous charm of William Holden then the whole second half of the veil will not work. But luckily Bogie is on fire with this interpretation, carrying the weight of the skin on his shoulders with a deeply sympathetic demeanour the likes of which I don’t remembering ever having had seen from him before. It’s an improbable bit of luck that Cary Gift stepped out right before filming, allowing Bogie to divulge into the elder Larabee r.
